Utah Jazz Roster Report 2009-10-02

Utah Jazz Roster Report 2009-10-02PLAYER NEWS:

--C Mehmet Okur shot 44.6 percent from three-point range last season, but has worked to improve his low-post game this season. Okur added a running hook shot in the summer that he plans to debut in the preseason.

--F Ronald Dupree could be a potential replacement for injured F Matt Harpring. Dupree has five years of NBA experience and finished last season with the Utah Flash, the Jazz's NBA Development League affiliate. Dupree has come full circle with the Jazz, having been cut from their summer-league team in 2003.

--C Kyrylo Fesenko reported to training camp at 300 pounds with 11.3 percent body fat, down from 315 pounds and 15 percent last season. Having only played in 30 games his first two seasons with the Jazz, Fesenko will look to make a push for more playing time this season.

--G Deron Williams has committed to playing with USA Basketball at the 2010 World Championships in Turkey. Williams was part of the gold-medal winning U.S. team at the 2008 Olympics and also played in a 2007 Olympic qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.

--G Eric Maynor might not beat out Ronnie Price for the backup point guard job, but the rookie from Virginia Commonwealth has made a positive impression on Deron Williams. "Usually, they come in here and they're going a mile a minute," Williams said. "We're still trying to slow some of the young guys down to this day. For him to come in and be that poised and just be under control, that's what I'm really impressed with."

MEDICAL WATCH:

--F Matt Harpring continues to make little progress with respect to his injured ankle and knee. The Jazz ruled out Harpring for training camp, the preseason and the start of the regular season and allowed him to return home to Atlanta during that time. Harpring will be reevaluated in November but his 11-year NBA career could be close to an end.

--G Kyle Korver has been bothered by an inflamed left knee at the start of the preseason. Korver missed the Jazz's first exhibition game and has struggled with pain when bending his knee forward. There is no timetable for Korver's return, but his injury has not been deemed serious so far.

DRAFT PICKS:

Eric Maynor, G, 6-3, Virginia Commonwealth (first round) -- As always, the Jazz plan to carry three point guards on their roster, but will Maynor be able to find minutes playing behind Deron Williams and possibly Ronnie Price?

Goran Suton, C, 6-10, Michigan State (second round) -- The Jazz coaches were impressed by Suton's workout, but he will have to compete to make the team with young centers Kyrylo Fesenko and Kosta Koufos already on the roster.
