Utah Jazz Roster Report 2008-08-29
DRAFT PICKS:

Kosta Koufos, C, 7-0, Ohio State -- With range out to the three-point arc, Koufos someday could succeed Mehmet Okur with the Jazz. He was one of 10 freshmen to be drafted in the first round and likely is ticketed for the NBA Development League as a rookie.

Ante Tomic, C, 7-2, Croatia -- The 21-year-old will remain overseas for at least another season and possibly longer. But the Jazz believe Tomic will someday play in the NBA. He has size and skills but little strength to play inside.

Tadija Dragicevic, F, 6-9, Serbia -- The Jazz believe the Adriatic League MVP will someday play in the NBA, much like Tomic. There are questions about whether Dragicevic is best suited as a power forward or a small forward.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Jazz have been quiet so far in free agency, expressing interest in a handful of players, some of whom already have signed elsewhere. That included Clippers G Corey Maggette, who signed a $43 million offer sheet with the Jazz in 2003 that was matched by the Clippers. Maggette headed to Golden State, as did Lakers F Ronny Turiaf, whom the Jazz inquired about. Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said the team likely was doing with any free-agent signings but would explore trade possibilities throughout August.

PLAYER NOTES:

--G Ronnie Price welcomed the arrival of 11-year veteran Brevin Knight from the Clippers in a trade, even if it leads to a competition for minutes between the two. Price finished last season as the Jazz's No. 2 point guard, but Knight has started the equivalent of five full seasons in his career. Deron Williams averaged 37 minutes a game last season, leaving scarce playing time for his two backups.

"I've watched Brevin play his whole career and (I've) been a fan of Brevin Knight," Price said. "He doesn't have to be super explosive and just be a crazy athlete, but still in all he can get the job done and he just does all the right things on the court."

--G C.J. Miles tried to put a positive spin on his return to Utah. The Jazz opted to match the four-year, $14.8 million offer sheet Miles signed with Oklahoma City. Miles would have competed for minutes with the Thunder (or whatever the relocated Sonics will be called) but his role with the Jazz is far less certain. The Jazz have four wings who played ahead of Miles last season in Ronnie Brewer, Andrei Kirilenko, Kyle Korver and Matt Harpring. Miles also has done himself no favors by skipping summer league play the last two years.

"Who says that I can't come in," Miles said, "and work as hard and earn significant minutes on this team like it's the same thing going to Oklahoma City?"

--G After playing for eight other teams in his career, Brevin Knight finally will get the chance to play for a true contender in Utah. Knight has been to the playoffs only twice in his career (both were first-round exits) compared to spending six seasons with teams that lost 50-plus games.

"I think that we have the pieces to be able to win," Knight said. "Hopefully, I'll just be one of those final pieces to bring it all together."
