Utah Jazz Getting Inside 2009-07-02
As much stability as they have enjoyed with John Stockton and Deron Williams at point guard over the years, the Jazz have struggled when it comes to finding capable backup ballhandlers.

Howard Eisley and Shandon Anderson are the two most regularly cited success stories. The last two seasons, the Jazz have searched for consistency between Jason Hart, Brevin Knight and Ronnie Price.

But the Jazz hope they found their backup point guard of the future in Virginia Commonwealth's Eric Maynor. The Jazz selected Maynor with the 20th pick in the June 25 draft, amid a run of five consecutive point guards chosen.

Maynor pulled out of a scheduled workout with the Jazz with back spasms, but visited them for an interview on the eve of the draft.

That was more than could be said for point guard prospects Ty Lawson, Darren Collison and Patrick Mills, all of whom passed on the Jazz's invitation to come in for a workout, citing Williams' entrenchment at the position.

Williams has averaged 37 minutes a game the last three seasons, but the Jazz believe their backup point guard could be used for 15 minutes or so a game in some cases.

"I'm coming in there to work, man, do whatever the team needs me to do," Maynor said. "Deron Williams is one of the best point guards in the NBA. For me to come in there and learn from a guy like that, I think it'll be great for me."

They also could find minutes by playing Williams as an off guard, as they have done on occasion. Williams' preference is to have the ball in his hands, though he did play off guard in particular with USA Basketball.

Maynor fits the Jazz's mold in coming from an off-the-radar college. Most recently, Paul Millsap has thrived in Utah as a former second-round pick out of Louisiana Tech.

Although he played at a mid-major college, Maynor twice led VCU into the NCAA Tournament and hit the game-winning shot as the Rams upset Duke in the first round in 2007.

"I think if you look at the success that Eric's had in his college career, you'll understand why we're happy to have him," Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said.

Maynor has to put on size at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, but the Jazz note that he didn't have the same strength and conditioning resources available at VCU that he might have had at a college with a Division I football program.
