Orem ? After closing the regular season with a rush, the Utah Flash open the NBA Development League playoffs Wednesday against Bakersfield.
Tipoff is 7 p.m. at the McKay Events Center. The Flash (32-18) won six of their final seven games to capture the West Division title and earn the No. 2 seed in the eight-team D-League playoffs.
"We had to play really well to get the second seed," coach Brad Jones said. "... Hopefully, it will continue in the playoffs."
Utah has beaten Bakersfield the last four times the teams have played, including a 108-92 rout at home on March 31.
The Flash are led by three NBA asignees, Morris Almond and Kosta Koufos of the Utah Jazz and J.R. Giddens of the Boston Celtics.
Almond has averaged 23.9 points since joining the Flash. He missed the final two games of the season, but he will be available against Bakersfield.
"Those three guys give us a lot of star power, I guess you could say," Jones said. "All of them have had big games for us since they've been here."
Bakersfield, coached by former Jazz player Scott Roth, finished 26-24.
The Jam are led by guard-forward Trey Johnson, forward Derrick Byars and point guard Mateen Cleaves.
All three players have spent time in the NBA and, according to Jones, "are capable of putting up big numbers against you. ... We need to play well to slow them down a little."
Other first-round games in the D-League playoffs include top-seeded Colorado against Erie, No. 3 seed Iowa against Dakota and No. 4 seed Austin against Idaho.
If Utah beats Bakersfield, it will play host to the Iowa-Dakota winner in a semifinal game. The winner will advance to the D-League championship series, which is a best two-of-three.
