England forever With the Jazz facing Chicago in London next October, this seems as good a time as any to recall two Brits who played in Utah. Using the term "played" liberally. The first was 7-foot-5 Alan Bannister, who sat on the injured list all of the 1990-91 season.

The other was John Amaechi, whose stormy relationship with Jerry Sloan ended in his being traded in 2003. A 2008 Whitby (England) Gazette article on Bannister said he "has played all around the world, including for the American NBA team the Utah Jazz , where he played against the likes of Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing ..." Bannister, however, never actually appeared in a regular season NBA game. Zero. Then there's Amaechi, a 32 percent shooter for the Jazz, whose Web site (amaechibasketball.com) calls him "the U.K.'s first and only NBA superstar." So Bannister hung with MJ and Amaechi was a superstar. Next thing you know, Brits will be claiming they won the Revolutionary War and invented buffalo wings. Dawn patrol The Ute football team held a 5:30 a.m. practice last Wednesday to make up for the Tuesday afternoon practice that they missed. A gas leak near the Field House forced the cancellation. "It was rough," said linebacker Stevenson Sylvester. "I mean, nobody wanted to be here, but we had a good practice for being 5:30 in the morning." The worst part wasn't the early hour, though. It was that nobody could show up late, claiming he got stuck in traffic. Gutter ball Police in a Sacramento suburb responded last week to a bowling alley fight that resulted in one man's tooth being knocked out with a bowling ball. Ryan Scott David allegedly hit a man in the face during a fight over use of one of the lanes. David was held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in Placer County Jail, according to the Sacramento Bee. Four others were charged with disturbing the peace after showing up in really bad bowling shirts. L.A. law Lakers star Kobe Bryant got a break from Basketball on March 19 when he served several hours on jury duty. He was questioned by attorneys but dismissed as a potential juror. "Everyone has to do their duty," Bryant told the Orange County Register. Sources tell Rock On that Bryant wanted to serve because he thinks he gets mugged and beaten every time he drives the lane. Just a concerned citizen, trying to take a bite out of crime. E-MAIL: rock@desnews.com
