Corbin to help Team USA
Jazz assistant coach Tyrone Corbin has been tapped to work as an assistant for USA Basketball's summer program in July. Corbin will work with a group of 24 burgeoning NBA stars ? including Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, Chicago's Derrick Rose, Portland's Greg Oden, O.J. Mayo of Memphis and likely 2009 No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Blake Griffin of the University of Oklahoma ?

who are prospective candidates for the national team's entries at the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The mini-camp will be held July 22-25 in Las Vegas. Corbin will join Detroit's Dave Cowens, Kenny Gattison of New Orleans and Minnesota's Jerry Sichting as assistants to Toronto Raptors head coach Jay Triano, who will direct the camp. Triano, a former Jazz training camp participant, is a native of Canada who coached that country's national team to a seventh-place finish at the 2000 Olympic Games. Corbin just completed his fifth season as an assistant coach in Utah. He played 16 seasons in the NBA, including three with the Jazz from 1991-94. Some members of USA Basketball's gold medal-winning team at the 2008 Games in China ? which included Jazz point guard Deron Williams and Jazz power forward Carlos Boozer ? are expected to make two-year commitments to play internationally in both 2010 and 2012. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski coached the '08 Olympic team, but it remains to be seen if he'll return for another four years. ALUMNI UPDATE: According to a report earlier this month in The Japan Times, ex- Jazz forward David Benoit resigned after a two-year tenure as head coach of the Japanese Professional Basketball League's Saitama Broncos. The Broncos went 19-33 this past season. "I just felt like maybe it was time for me to move on," Benoit told the Times. "I really tried to improve this team and help it get better, and for two years in a row ? it just didn't happen." According to the newspaper report, Benoit and his wife ? parents of five children, including a newborn baby ? "said he'd like to remain in Japan and coach for another team" in the same league. Benoit played seven NBA seasons, including six over two stints with the Jazz from 1991-2001. He also played two seasons for Saitama from 2005-07. HE SAID IT: Phoenix star Amare Stoudemire, to Atlanta radio station WQXI 790-AM, when asked where people heckle him the most: "There's always 'that guy,' in whatever stadium, especially in Utah. There's always a few of those guys in Utah, that always are heckling you. That's the name of the game and that's the fun part of it. You got true fans that really enjoy it. That's what they go to the game for, is to heckle that star." E-mail: tbuckley@desnews.com
